Chief Pilot
Carol Sugars

Carol was born in England, in a small market town bordering the beautiful Peak District National Park, an area of huge ecological significance containing over 100 areas of conservation and 50 “environmentally sensitive areas” - small wonder then that she maintains a keen interest in the preservation of the natural world. Her interest in aviation began at around age 5 and developed into a lifelong love affair which has never abated. Carol was educated at local schools and colleges in the UK and specialized in both Mechanical Engineering and Avionics/Aerospace Engineering, skills which were put to practical use when she spent seven years serving in the British Royal Air Force.

In 1989 Carol moved to the USA and is now a naturalized US citizen. Carol has worked as an Air Ambulance Pilot, Charter Pilot, Flight Instructor and Airline Pilot. She holds FAA licenses for Ground and Flight Instructor, Airline Transport Pilot and Flight Engineer. With over 8000 hours of flight time she has flown many different types of aircraft all over the world, from light single engine to four engine heavy jets. In addition to her duties as Green Flight Chief Pilot she flies internationally for a major US airline, is an FAA Safety Team Representative and also Manager of the Orlando Apopka Airport in Florida. Her interests include jogging, history, science and technology, reading and travel, Carol believes in “a common sense and practical approach to doing the right thing.”

Chief Science Advisor

Baylor University Institute for Air Science Director

Maxwell E. Shauck Jr.

Training- 1972-1975 - National Institute of Health Postdoctoral Fellow - Bio-Mathematics Department, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina and Atmospheric Sciences Research Center (ASRC), State University of New York at Albany. Formal course work in air pollution meteorology, air pollution chemistry, applied statistics and air pollution instrumentation. Instrumented and flew airplanes for various projects at ASRC in New York and North Carolina.

Principal Investigator - Chief Pilot - Airborne Sampling for the Houston Area Oxidants Study (HAOS) 1976-1978. This project was initiated by the city of Houston in response to a U.S. federal court order to reduce pollutant levels in Houston. Two major goals set by HAOS were to determine the causes of high ozone and atmospheric haze in the Houston area. Ozone, oxides of nitrogen and back scattering were measured on a total of 72 flights.

Principal Investigator- Chief Pilot - Plume Characterization from Exxon Largo Refinery, Aruba Netherland Antilles. June - August 1978. Ozone, Sulphur Oxides and atmospheric turbidity were measured in these flights. The flights measured the geometry and pollutant concentrations of the plume from the refinery and clear to the mainland of Columbia. The data was used to validate the Turner-Gifford model as well as the levels of the measured pollutants.

Principal Investigator- Chief Pilot - Long Range Transport of Photochemical Pollutants: June-August 1979.This project was initiated and funded by the General Motors Research Laboratories. Patterns were flown over southern Alabama, Louisiana and out into the Gulf of Mexico about 200 miles to verify the theory. The project resulted in confirmation of the theory. Basically this project showed that photochemical pollutants travel thousands of miles and still maintain high concentrations. This altered scientific thinking in some areas of air pollution transport.
